Google recently decided that it wanted to cash in on the very lucrative cell phone market, and in January 2015, their Ara is set to debut. This phone however is nothing like your standard smart phone or anything you may have seen before. It’s modular and therefore much more adaptable to change and upgrades and updates down the road.
Take a look at the Ara and why many are saying that modular may be the next big thing when it comes to cell phones.
Why Modular?
Modular means that each component of the phone is separate and can therefore be changed. With typical smartphones, the screen is part of the body and other add-ons are also part of internal chips, so that a fingerprint scanner is contained inside the phone as is the camera itself. With a modular cell phone each of those components is separate and outside the body.
This allows for easier upgrades and personalization of your phone. If the screen breaks you can simply remove it and replace it with a new one. If you don’t like the camera on your phone, you can remove it and upgrade to something with better resolution. You can also easily remove modules that you don’t use in order to free up space for other ones that are better suited for you. With a standard smart phone, you would need to replace your entire phone if the screen broke or learn how to unlock the phone in order to change the programming.
How It Happened
If you’re wondering how it happened that Google came up with the idea for a modular phone, it was quite by accident. After someone dropped a test model and broke the screen, they decided it would be a good idea to have parts like that separate from the body of the phone!
Google technicians then took this idea one step further and decided the entire phone should be modular so that all parts could be interchanged. This idea may make the Google Ara the next best thing in cell phones and definitely the one that everyone will be talking about.
