The Urban Glider

Whoever discovered technology in the first place, deserves a round of applause. Things just keep on getting more interesting as each day passes. I am sure I am not the only one who finds that technology is the father of evolution. Look at the transport sector. Commuting is one factor human beings cannot avoid at all in their lives. Our own legs can facilitate this, but technology came around and we realized we can sit back and get a bit lazy. Picture the introduction of the locomotive machine. From log gliders, to bicycles, cars, motorbikes and more recently, the urban glider.

At any one point of our lifetime, it was virtually impossible to ever imagine using a ‘mono-wheeled’ vehicle for locomotion. In reality, the thought of it sounds absurd and insane, right? Any way insanity should be technology’s second name. Any one who wishes to raise an objection, alas the urban glider. This surely is one in a million inventions.

The Urban Glider is a gyroscopically stabilized electric mono-wheel machine, which basically means that it has one wheel, and it automatically keeps you upright. Any one with the right kind of thinking will definitely wonder and ask how this is in anyway possible, as we all know that it took time to balance on a two wheeled bicycle. Now then, what about a mono-wheeled machine? To ride on it, you simply stand on the fold-out footplates on either side of the wheel, and the Glider responds to your movements. Leaning forward speeds you up, leaning back slows you down, and steering is entirely a matter of leaning and twisting your body.

Did you just read that? One cannot help but visualize on sitting, leaning forward and enjoying the ride. It is an opportunity to feel like super-man. Only that in this case, superman will be a not so fast super hero. The urban glider uses a 1500 watt motor which is capable of propelling the wheel to a top speed of 13mph, and a battery which can hold 20 miles worth of charge, and will charge to 80% capacity in half an hour. After this news, one would love to see the urban glider in a racing competition. On the other hand, will the machine ever get into an accident in that speed? On second thoughts, that sounds like a really fantastic idea of enhancing safety for short distance operators. i don’t see how on will move from state to state and make it to the office in time.

The urban glider should get an appreciation campaign for really showing that technology brings forth evolution. It seems like a dream come true for the ‘geeky’ kid who watches nothing but sci-fi movies and cartoons. In short, it was something no one thought would ever actualize for everyday life utility. This is an awakening. With this kind of trends and innovations cropping up everyday, all we can do is sit back and wait for the day you will only have to sit on nothing but air, and glide steadily all the way to your work place.
