Fire extinguisher is an integral fixture in any property. While there are regulations that compel the installation or presence of sufficient number of fire extinguishers in commercial properties, it shouldn’t be for regulations to make it imperative. Any property should have a fire extinguisher, regardless of its size or whether it is a home or commercial property.
The traditional fire extinguisher has undergone many changes over the years and it has managed to save innumerable lives. But there is always some scope of improvement. That is precisely what has been worked on by designers Jiang Jiongfan, Lin Shuang, Xue Rui & Zha Lianghao. The quartet has come up with what they call the Fire Hammer. According to them, in case of fire, just use the hammer.
The fire hammer is a conventional fire extinguisher with three noticeable differences. First, the design is not exactly the same although you do get to know from one look at it that it is a fire extinguisher. Second, there are two robust handles for anyone to grip the extinguisher while using it or when moving it from one place to another. The handles surely make portability a cakewalk. The third difference with a conventional fire extinguisher is the bottom end of the cylinder. Instead of a round base, the fire hammer actually has a sunken in bottom that can act as a hammer.
The primary purpose of the fire hammer is to allow people trapped during fire to break through doors, locks and glass barriers so they can make their way out of the locked space. It is quite possible that people would be unable to get to the stairs, corridors or open spaces in the untoward event of a fire. In such instances, having a fire hammer will allow them to break through wooden partitions which are relatively easy to break through in commercial spaces. Normal doors or glass partitions would not be a problem either. The fire hammer certainly adds a great utility to the conventional fire extinguisher and the handles make it much easier to grip. With conventional fire extinguisher designs, holding it up takes some training and practice.
While the fire hammer does appear to be more utilitarian, yet it doesn’t address the capacity as making space for the hammer like bottom end would certainly reduce the capacity of the tank and that may not be very desirable.
